Chandler residents have been aggressively protesting a development of more than 500 affordable apartments for families and seniors on Ocotillo Road near Arizona Avenue. They’ve stormed city council meetings and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, which ultimately has the final say on approval. A reporter dug into some of the details here. First, the affordable units will be partly financed with tax credits and will have income limits; some may use vouchers. The article outlines those income limits, asserting the units could house a variety of workers that the community needs. Next, “traffic concerns” are, as usual, not truly an issue. Finally, the “too many new students” argument is off base; the school district is accepting new students at all 33 elementary schools and 13 junior high schools, with a few minor exceptions.
