Tim Steller’s column: Tucson needs all new housing, not just affordable

Although Tucson’s affordable housing program is ambitious, it’s not keeping up with market rate homes in large part due to NIMBYism and a long lag time implementing a new permit system. This is causing pain points throughout the housing pipeline, Steller argues, because when new market rate housing goes up, whoever moves into it might vacate a unit that’s ideal for someone with a lower income. Though that isn’t always the case, any new housing helps. The city needs to beef up market rate units align with affordable housing in order to build the true number of units needed.
